The Looming Tax Threat to Associations

Associations collectively have enjoyed tax-exempt status since 1913 with the enaction of the federal income tax. In 1917 Congress deepened this relationship with nonprofits by creating the charitable deduction. The 119th Congress, however, is in a position to change what has been in place for more than a hundred years as they look for additional sources for tax revenue and eye the nonprofit sector. 

In an interview with Mary Kate Cunningham, CAE, Chief Public Policy and Governance Officer, ASAE: The Center for Association Leadership, she urges associations: “There’s a very serious threat coming from Congress. Our message is we have to be at the table so that we’re not on the menu.”
